I agree because there can be truly "crooked minded" and truly "straight minded" people. although almost everybody can be good, there are some that are naturally devious or crooked. However, having this difference of character creates a balance. According to The World on the Turtle's back, "The world the twins made was a balanced and orderly world" (Pg. 27).

I disagree because all people show that they are both "crooked" and "straight" minded. Those who do commit crimes show that they are crooked, but may show kindness too. In The World on the Turtle's Back,"But the right-handed twin picked out a deer antler, and with one touch destroyed his brother." (Pg. 28) The right handed twin was conceived as the honest, straightfoward person but showed that he can be crooked by killing his twin.

For example, when someone constantly does something that tremendously angers you, the first thing you think of is most likely not something good. On page 27 of The World on the Turtle's Back, "So the right- and the left-handed twins built balance into the world." The left handed twin created a carnivorous world and the right handed twin created a vegetation world. These worlds symbolize the balance of human nature. Everyone is both good and bad.

I disagree, because I believe there is “crooked” and “straight” mindedness in everyone to balance human nature. On page 28, in The World on a Turtle’s Back, the right handed twin, the honest one, lies to the left handed twin, and the left handed twin, the crooked one, tells the truth. This is showing that there is crooked and straight mindedness in everyone. One might show good, but they do have a little bad in them, also. In the story The World on the Turtle's Back, the two twins "represented two ways of the world which are in all people". The Iroquois called these ways "the straight mind and the crooked mind". I agree with this view of human nature because after the twins' births, the grandmother told them to stop quarreling but favored the left-handed twin (the devious twin) when the quarreling continued. On Page 26 of The World on the Turtle's Back, "...the right-handed twin accused his brother of murdering their mother. But the grandmother told them to stop their quarreling. ... But the conflict of the twins did not end at the grave of their mother. And, strangely enough, the grandmother favored the left-handed twin." As the twins grew up, the right-handed twin and the left-handed twin kept the world balanced between good and evil. On Page 27 of the story, "The right-handed twin made the deer, and the left-handed twin made the mountain lion which kills the deer. But the right-handed twin knew there would always be more deer than mountain lions. ... The world the twins made was a balanced and orderly world, and this was good."

I disagree because in the world there are people that are known to be bad or ‘crooked’, and also good or ‘straight’, but everyone has that good in them or bad in them. In “The World on the Turtle’s Back” it says, “…she saw the ocean far below. She leaned down and stuck her head through the hole and looked all around. No one knows just what happened next” (Pg.24). The woman wanted something from the tree, the man was saying how it is a bad thing to do and to not do it (making him look like a good man), the women went to look into the hole, she fell in but no one knew what happen. The man could have pushed her in which is showing that a known to be good person, can also be bad or ‘crooked’. A person can say they are a bad person but do have good things that they do, also, people can say they are nice and never do anything wrong, but do things that are mean or wrong. Everyone has good in them and bad in them.

I disagree, I believe that there crooked people can have some good in them and straight minded people can have a form of negativity in them too. People in this world represent the yin yang symbol. Crooked people have a form of honesty deep down and straight forward, honest people have a presence of negativity within them. This is balance and can be expressed through out the story " The World on the Turtles Back". In this story, there are two twin brothers, the left twin/deceiving, dishonest, crooked one and the right handed twin/honest straight minded twin. Although the crooked twin is classified as the crooked one, on page 28, he told the truth for once while the all honest twin lied. The right handed twin not only lied but he also murdered his brother and beheaded his grandmother. This shows how the crooked one has a little good in him representing the black side with the white dot of the yin yang symbol and how the all honest, good twin represents the white half with the black dot. All of that yin yang stuff represents balance, which is the main theme of this story.

In the world there are not just all bad people or all good people. In the story “The World on the Turtles Back” tells how there are twins. One which is the right hand that is straightforward and the other is the left hand which is crooked. The twins put a balance on the earth. Many people say/think that there are just crooked or straightforward people. I disagree with this because everyone has bad and good in them. Page 28 “…somehow the deep mind of each entered the other.” This is saying how the crooked got into the mind of the right hand twin and good seeped into the left hand twin. Therefore everyone has a bit of good and bad in them.

There are those kind of people that are knows as devious but they sometimes do something good and there are people that are known as straight minded but sometimes they do bad things to. The right handed twin murdered his brother and beheaded his grandmother. I disagree, with this point of view of human nature. This is because, within the world there are people who can be "straight" minded but still have a bad side to them and vice versa. On page 28, it states "And the deep mind of the right-handed twin lied to his brother..." that shows that there is bad within the good. If everyone was prescribed as being either "crooked" or "straight" minded there would not be any room for either party to switch how they think. With this being said there can be an in between of good and bad.

I disagree that the views in The World on the Turtles back is wrong and not everyone is either entirely straight or crooked. I believe that in the world there is good in every bad and bad in every good like the ying yang. Also for example in everyone's life someone has lied but even if they are good making them not truly straight. In The World on the Turtles Back page 23 stated, " The husband knew picking bark from the Great Tree was wrong but he gave in anyway to the women," this shows that all though the man knew it was wrong he did it for the women showing he is good but made a sacrifice.

I agree that human nature should be balanced because if the world was to bad things wouldn't go right same with the good. For example, on (pg. 27) the right handed twin made deer and the left handed twin made the mountain lion. So there would be more deer than the lion so the lion could eat the deer to keep things balanced. The balance is important because without it there would be to many deer.

I disagree with this view based on human nature. I see it as if everyone else thinks that you are crooked. There is always a way that what you did/ what you thought about doing was good. Meaning that someone somewhere thought what you did was not completely crooked. That in your head when you did it it wasn't bad. That when the right-handed twin made the deer. The left-handed twin thought that it was ok to make the mountain lion.

I agree that all people have a straight mind and a crooked mind. The reason why is because we, as people, have the right to choose what we do or who we be. All though people tend to lean towards straight minded or crooked minded they do show the other side sometimes through their actions. In the story The World on the Turtle's Back you see people doing the opposite of what they are. The women in the beginning of the story is indicated to be a little crooked by her action of marking the sacred tree in the middle of the universe. The tree was not suppose to be marked or mutilated by any of the beings who dwelt in the Sky-World ( Pg,23). This sentence proves that she knew not to mark the tree in any way. Later on in the story she takes care of her late daughter's two twins , but she never really had to take on the responsibility of that. She choose to do both actions which show she can have both traits. Also the right-handed twin , who was the straight minded twin, killed both his brother and grandmother proving that he can be devious if he choose to.

I agree with why the left handed twin and the right handed twin represents the crooked and the straight. The left handed twin represented the crooked because in when he was born, he went out the mother's armpit. He also created the evil one earth, such the lion, the bear, and other predators. The right handed twin on the other hand was the straight because he when he was born, he went out where all babies are born. Also, when he dueled with the left handed twin, he created man, deer, the buffalo, an other prey on earth to help the earth become "straight." People say that he was also crooked for killing the mother and his brother, which was crooked. But the culture back then was different, and the killing of the grandmother and brother may have been righteous back then as they believed this as a religion.

I disagree with the idea that people can only be all straight minded or all crooked minded. I believe some people can be both straight and crooked at the same time. I don’t believe anyone can be perfectly good or perfectly bad. Nothing is perfect, therefore this idea is false. Yin and Yang show that good has some bad, and bad has some good.

I agree with the view of human nature "The World on the Turtle’s Back" has. Everyone does have a crooked and straight mind within themselves. The right-handed twin has done some bad things like kill his brother and grandma on page 28. The grandma brought plants to the world, but done so by touching the sacred tree, which wasn’t allowed (p. 24). Having both the straight and crooked mind in people creates balance.

I agree with the outlook on human nature provided in "The World on the Turtle's Back" in stating that there is good and bad in that coexist in all people and the rate of good and evil must remain constant in order to keep balance. One such example is the Right Twin who was always "good" in the view of most people because even though he killed his brother and grandmother on page 28 he believed he was doing the right thing.
