He is important because he part of the first written document we have discovered. Also, the mystery that he is involved with, if that homer is a real person, or it was a group of people, and if troy was a real city or just part of the story. He is the main character in this story. He foreshadows the events that are coming because we can read his thoughts. And he outlines the story from his point of view

he would still be considered a hero because he saved his crew. he was the leader who did things or thought of things nobody else would do. that's what we consider hero's people who save and protect people.

Ithaca is the homeland of Odysseus, therefore it plays an important role. Odysseus, the king of Ithaca, wants nothing more than being able to go back to his home land. His promised his men that they will make it back as well. The 9th book of the Odyssey is part of their journey trying to make it back to Ithaca.

The ninth book in the Odyssey is very important. It was written by homer and tells the tail of Odysseus. It is important to understand book 9 because it could be hard to understand the other books if we didn't understand this one.

The role of Calypso is not entirely important in book 9. She is only spoken of in the beginning, which talks about how she held Odysseus captive because she was in love with him. The importance of Calypso in understanding the events and attitude is more important than her role. If Odysseus never got out of the cave he was being held in (by Calypso) he couldn't have injured Polyphemus nor return to his home. Actually, Odysseus going to the Cyclopes And Lotus Eaters' land would have never happened because he'd still be in the cave with Calypso.

Good response! I like how you mentioned what would have happened if Calypso hadn't let him go or hadn't existed.

I feel that Polyphemus' role in book IX is pretty significant because he is included in one of Odysseus' obstacles. In order to understand the Odyssey you would have to understand Odysseus' decisions and why he makes them. The role of Polyphemus and his conflict between Odysseus and himself help to explain what type of person Odysseus is. Because of Odysseus' actions when he encounters Polyphemus and what he says, you could infer that Odysseus is very full of himself. Without Polyphemus, it would be more difficult to come to that conclusion of the characteristics of Odysseus, the main character.

I agree with you, Odysseus' encounter with Polyphemus reveals many character traits we would not have known about otherwise.

I think that the lotus eaters are not all that important. They played a small role in book IX. The lotus eaters gave fruit to some of Odysseus men that made them forget where their homeland is and made them want to stay with the lotus eaters and eat more of the lotus. If Odysseus never went to the island of the lotus eaters he would never have lost some of his men, or would have had to tie them up and bring them back onto his ship.

I somewhat agree, their role isn't too important, however, they do bring up the theme of homesickness and that some of the men are losing faith in getting back home.

I think that every character plays a good roll in the book. The characters that are out in the book are there for a reason even though they don't have a big impact in the story line

I agree that if it never happened, he wouldn't have lost some of his men, but I also think that if it never happened, the story might be completely different.

I have been researching odysseus. Odyseseus is very important to the 9th book of the Odssey. This is becasue Odysseus is the main charecter, without odysseus there wouldnt be much of a book because he is the man who came up with the plan to save his men. Odysseus is a smart brave man who blinded the cyclops and took his men home. Odysseus makes the book easily understood because it is writen in firstperson. Without a leader of the men the men would fail and the story would become unclear of whats going on.

I am researching about the lotus eaters. Their role in the Odyssey is to create a hurdle for Odysseus to jump over. They landed on the lotus eaters island, and when they were sucked in by the lotus eaters and forgot what their tasks were, Odysseus saved them. That shows how easy it is to loose focus and give up. Odysseus didn't give up on his crew. He went back to save them, he did this by tying them to the boat to keep them from going back.

The character Polyphemus and the Cyclopes are pretty important in the Odyssey. In the book they stand as a trial for Odyssseus to overcome. Not only do they stand as a trial but also they help the reader see the character traits of Odyssseus and what type of person he is. Without the Cyclopes there would be a lot of missing pieces in the Odyssey especially since it's based off of Greek Mythology.

Ithaca plays an important role in the Odyssey for many reasons. First, it is the main character, Odysseus, homeland. With this, it drives the plot of the story because all Odysseus wants to do is get himself and his crew to their homes in Ithaca.m Finally, the dangerous route to Ithaca spawns many of the adventures to happen in the story. In conclusion, the city of Ithaca plays a very important role in the Odyssey.

Im researching Odysseus for my PowerPoint. It is important mostly becaus he is the main character in the books and he is known for a hero in peoples eyes. The reader gets a chance to see Odysseus good side and also not so good side. He overcomes so many obstacles in his life just to reach home. Odysseus does slot for his men and to bring them home. The book is dangerous, interesting and helpful.

I don't think Athena has a very important role in book nine. At least, not as important as Odysseus. Book nine is mainly focused on Odysseus who is the main character. Most of book nine is about Odysseus and his attempt to make it home. Book nine also includes Penelope, Cyclops, lotus eaters and Telemachus.

I am researching Calypso. She is important to book nine because she ends up falling in love with one of the main characters. She is the sea, and she takes ships from their ports. And she messes with them. My topic is pretty Important. It plays major roles in book nine.

Polythemus and the Cyclopes play an important, visual role in Book 9 of The Odyssey. The reader is given, not only information about his journey back, but shows the Greek culture use of xenia. Here the reader can understand how important this is at this time. Also there is an important event at the Land of the Cyclopes that effects the rest of his jourmey back home and makes it seem everlasting.

Finally, Odysseus' visit to the Land of the Cyclopes helps allow the reader to comment on if he is a true hero.

I got Ithaca I consider it to be really important to the story because it is the homeland of Odysseus. He leaves trying to fight what is threatening his homeland. But because of his voyage can't exactly reach his way back to Ithaca and gets lost. This happens when coming down back home from Troy. This is very important to the story because technically if he wouldn't have left to save his land the whole story would have never happened.

I believe that Circe was very important in the book. She wasn't really talked about in Book 9. Because we haven't yet talked about her in class I feel she isn't iseful to the prompt. She was more leant to book X and Book XII. But she was the mother of Odysseus' 3 loving children

For my group's project, we were given Circe. Circe is important for this story because she was a sorceress who turned Odysseus' crew into swine. Odysseus wasn't effected and h made Circe turn them back to normal. We needed to know about Circe in order to realize that there was not just one event that delayed Odysseus' return home, but many situations were brought up.

My group was given the topic of Polyphemus. I believe that he is important to understanding book 9 because he was such an important factor in their journey. Polyphemus shows one of the many obstacles odysseus and his men have to encounter on his journey. Without Polyphemus , Odysseus could possibly be home sooner. Also without Polyphemus they would not have been able to move the rock and be stuck in there with no escape.

My topic is Ancient Greek Culture and it is very important in the Odyssey. Without the culture the book would be nothing, no customs would exist. It's hard enough to understand what is happening in the Odyssey, but without a background of the story would be terribly worse. In our society today we have a way of doings things and a certain role in society. Ancient Greece is a base of all society's today and a base in the Odyssey.

Zeus was important to the Odyssey because he killed off Odysseus' crew after they ate the immortal cows. This left just Odysseus to fend for himself after the god of gods struck down all but him. Zeus is the most important figure in all of Greek Mythology because he has total control of the skies.
