As Thoreau tried to do--find himself and define what is living--how does one know if they are truly living a meaningful life? Can the meaning of life be found in reducing one's possessions to their mere existence? Why do we as humans even attempt to find meaning and worth in our lives? Is it just for personal comfort or is there much more to this? Respond to the prompt, and then respond to TWO of your classmates. Remember to put your full name on the responses.

One can know how meaningful their life is with a simple word and a complexed pattern to it; Happiness. You see, joy is not found by the way of finding nothing. There will ALWAYS be a driving force that keeps the emotion intact. A questioning of this is as follows: Why search for this? Why can't it be set in stone that you must be happy, without question? It's more than personal gain to be happy in life; it's the afterword events of others who helped you achieve this state of being that amplify the effect of their accomplishment for you.

Happiness will always be the driving factor for everybody I think. It is not always something you can touch, but a feeling that can bring personal comfort. Providing feelings that are rather positive to ones self, and to others, can have a great impact on how we view life.

Happiness is not the only thing to a meaningful life. Nothing is that simple. I mean let's be honest. If the meaning to life was only happiness, then there wouldn't be all this thought everyone puts into this. Happiness is a necessity to living a meaningful life but not the factor that goes into is.

I believe that in order to live life to its full potential you must rid yourself of all things that are not a necessity, like some people do get rid of there house and all there belongings and live in the woods with just them self or there family. This gives them you the chance to experience just life. And I believe people do this to become closer with family, the self, and nature...

One knows if they are living a meaningful life by accomplisheing personal things that make your life seem complete. Most people have life long goals and when you set out to accomplish them, you have lived a successful life. The meaning of life can be found in reducing ones posessions because life shouldn't be about what you have, it should be about how you live. Humans find meaning in life for personal comfort in helping others and also making themselves feel happy everyday.

Only ones self knows the true meaning of life. It is the one you are in control of. Most will find that living is a blessing in the first place. The meaning of life will never revolve around the items someone owns. That is something society has created, but someone’s actual life cannot be valued by what they own. Religion is something people can use to find meaning in life. Having faith that after this life, there will be comfort, and all bliss in what was life before, can really make an individual find peace. Valuing this life is all someone really needs in order to find true happiness, and to make others happy as well.

One would know if they were or weren't living a meaningful life based on what they do and the things they stride for in life. Someone who is kind to all and tries their best to contribute to society would most likely feel as if their life had meaning, whereas someone who weren't the kindest and did nothing to help others may feel as if their life isn't as meaningful. I feel that the meaning of life can be found by one getting rid of their possessions like Thoreau did, but is not by any means required to find that meaning. If someone where to get rid of the majority of their possessions and moved to a serene place, as Thoreau did, finding the meaning of their lives would be much easier because they wouldn't worry about as many things such as their bills. I think that we as humans try to find meaning or value in our lives for personal comfort, but also because we don't want others to view our lives as meaningless such as friends, peers or if your a parent, your own children. We do this because we need the reassurance that we have done something with our lives so that we don't view ourselves as unimportant or worthless.

The meaning of life comes very simple to me. To truly be fulfilled, one must not only find purpose for themselves, but drive another person's as well. Without a purpose, life doesn't seem worth living. During the early stages of life, the goal was simply to pass on your genetics before you die. That was the only way one could impact the future.Although that still stands true in nature today, humans have surpassed the day to day survival. Now, we can impact the world with our thoughts and ideas. For we as a person may die, but they can live on forever. It's not what one had in life that matters, it's what they did that will out last the tests of time.

I believe the meaning of life is simply feeling like you have a purpose. I feel everyone knows if they have a meaning full life by simply feeling like they have accomplished things. This gives people a feeling of purpose in their lives leading to a meaningful life. Happiness is also key because if your not happy you will not feel like you lived a meaningful life. I believe possessions have nothing to do with the meaning of life. This is because they are just objects and objects don't control your life only you can. so by simply getting ride of them wont change your life. Humans try and find meaning in their lives because we are afraid of what will happen to us. We believe by thinking there is a meaning that we wont be forgotten. We don't want to believe that all of this was for nothing.

Hello William Page. Happiness is very important in life. I understand that you believe we should have more of an impact than just simply be happy, but I strongly disagree. First of all, happy people have a very big impact on the world, for if the world was full of angry people, the earth would be full of on-going wars, don't you think?Yes, our world today has fighting going on, but we still have those happy, peaceful people who keep the world somewhat calm and in serenity, not in total chaos. But these people who are happy may not have any impact on the world other than doing their small part of unknowingly keeping the world from going out of control. Second of all, not everyone can be geniuses who cure cancer or can become neurosurgeons who work on brains, changing the world. We are all different in our own ways, so happiness can be the only meaning someone may want out of life. Thank you and good day.

Life is beautiful and interesting. It was a gift given to us that we should be grateful for. Each person has their own life and can make their own decisions. Somewhere along the way, everyone begins to think about what the meaning of life actually is, not only for comfort but just simply out of curiosity. I am Catholic, so I believe that God put me here for a reason and that is enough meaning that I will ever need. I hope I don't offend anyone when I bring my religion into this blog, it's just that it is a big part of my life so I thought I should share it. Anyways, back to the discussion. The true meaning of life is different for every person. There isn't one specific definition of it. Every person figures that out on their own. Although I believe God is my meaning, I also believe there are other parts to it such as happiness and receiving the love of others. No one should spend their life working a miserable job that they don't like, or be so busy that they never have time for others or even themselves. In order for us to find our own meaning, we must make time for us to really think about what we want out of life. Whether we want fame, money, love, or just simply happiness, those factor into what we choose to do with the life we were given. We are the ones who decide whether our lives have true meaning or not. We have the power to be able to define our own meaning, so make it something special.

The purpose of life is to accomplish your wildest dreams, discover who you are as an individual, and to find your perfect mate. As mammals, it is practically our destiny to find the other half of us within another person, and to eventually reproduce with them - but in order to reproduce and love somebody else, you must first discover you who are and love however you turn out. While discovering who you are, you will find out what you are passionate about and what drives you crazy. In order to have a fulfilling and meaningful life, (in my opinion) you must pursue what you are passionate about, whether that be a movement, a certain career opportunity, etc.

The meaning of life is a matter of opinion. One might say that life is defined by all of the factors that go into your existence. Not only are there good factors such as friendship, love, and your religion, but there are also bad factors such as fear, evil, and pain. Living a meaningful life is simply being surrounded by all of the different aspects that make up who you are inside. If you were to reduce all of your wealth into just your mere existence then you would not be the same person that you are today. For example, if you were to live a life without technology then your life would drastically change. You would not have the amount of friends or knowledge that today’s society provides you with. Therefore, if you wanted to find out who you are as a person, then you would need to live a life without any of the possessions that could possibly change how you think. If you were to not live life to the fullest then you would be unfulfilled. You would have nothing to define who you are besides the thoughts in your head that you would have to teach yourself. Lastly, people want to find the meaning and worth in their lives because no one wants to live a life where they know that they are not contributing anything to society. Everyone wants to be important and one way of feeling important is having a sense of self fulfillment.

I think nearly everybody over complicates the meaning of life. In my opinion, the meaning of life is to achieve whatever you set out to accomplish. It has nothing to do with belongings, its achieving the goal that you set for yourself on what you want to achieve in life

I believe that the meaning of life is something that differs from person to person everyone has a different view point on if they are actually living their life to the fullest. For some people the meaning of life could be fulfilled by giving up all their possessions and having a stress free life by living independently and becoming one with nature just as Thoreau did. The meaning of life can also simply be achieved just from the gift of life or just being happy with yourself and the way you are living. I personally believe that the meaning of life can be achieved by accomplishing your goals rather they are short or long terms goals, and knowing that when you leave the face of the Earth you know that you have accomplished everything you wanted to do. Also that you might have done something or left something behind to help future generations.

I believe to know that you're living a meaningful life you would actually have to feel like you are, it would only make sense. Doing what makes YOU happy and not basing your life on other people's needs would make me you feel accomplished and like you are living a valuable, meaningful life, it would make me feel that way anyways. As humans, I believe we live our lives the way we do because of society and how we are meant to look rather than how we want to look. For some, finding meaning in life is for personal comfort, and others it is for different reasons. I think to live a meaningful life you need to not worry about what other people think and do what makes you feel accomplished.

The meaning of life comes in any form of a feeling of being "full." Have you completed everything that you have set out to do? I honestly think that having no regrets is the meaning of life. Trying to define a certain goal for everyone is impossible. If becoming a professional dancer is your dream, and you achieve it, you have fulfilled your "meaning" of life. I think that all of the different meanings in life work together cohesively in the sense of either inspiring others, or working off of something else. Ultimately, I think the meaning of life is just being the best person you can be, and living life knowing that you have done everything to the best of your ability.

One knows if they are living a meaningful life is by accomplishing the things you make in your life. For example, the goals that you want to accomplish, maybe graduating high school, going to college, and then finding a job that pays you well. If you accomplish the goals that you've made then it will feel like you lived a meaningful life, then you will feel really happy. Also to be happy, if you are not happy then you will not feel like you lived a meaningful life. The meaning of life can be found in reducing one's possessions down to their mere existence because for example if you don't have your phone anymore, then you can try to find different ways to live a meaningful life. Technology is not the only way to live a meaningful life. Humans find meaning in life for personal comfort like making themselves not to feel stressed or unhappy, they try to make themselves be happy everyday.

I agree with you that accomplishing things in life, such as schooling and jobs, show that you are living a meaningful life. I like how you incorporated happiness as one of the main ways to live a meaningful life.

Many say that the true meaning life is if your are happy and feel good about yourself. I agree with that to a certain extent. If you are happy, yes, you are living a good life probably but if you are happy doing nothing to contribute to the world then I don't believe that is very meaningful. I think that God put everyone on this earth for a reason. So I think that believing that everyone lives a meaningful life but not completely. All need to do something with their life. I understand that people say its because of the "cards they are dealt." To argue that i leave you with the words of founder of Microsoft, Billionaire, Mr. Bill Gate's words, "If you are born poor, it's not your fault. But if you die poor, it's your fault."

Life isn’t something that can be defined. Life itself is how one sees it. Only the one living it can determine what the meaning of their life is. The way I try to understand the meaning of life is that it is something special. Living a meaningful life is to have no regrets. If you make a mistake just move forward because something good may come out of it. Also try to surround yourself with people who care about you. Everyone has different thoughts on what is meaningful to them and what would constitute a rewarding life. There is such beauty around us that we need to embrace it and enjoy what the world can show us. With technology today, no one really takes the time to actually look around and see what else the world has to offer. Be happy. Enjoy today, because you do not know what the future will hold. Life can change on a dime so live life…embrace it, live each day to its fullest. Surround yourself with family and friends. Take one day at a time. Love life.

I think that the way of living is based on like kind of a set of life goals. When you reach the end of these goals that is what i consider living doing everything that want to accomplish in life. Some people like top find out why they are here on earth like what is there purpose here. I do believe that it is a personal comfort for people to know there place in the world. Lots of people think that they have no place in this world that they are a nobody. people think of themselves as useless. That is why i think people do it for personal comfort.

“Where did we come from?” “Why are we here?” are the type of questions many people ask themselves, but can never find the answer too. Since the beginning of human history, we have used logic reasoning to try and explain why things happen. We always try to strive and search for the main purpose of the things that we accomplish in our own lives each and every day. We need reasoning and a purpose to accomplish something just like we need a reason to continue living. Otherwise life would be meaningless. I personally believe that the meaning of life is to find what is true to you, using your own personal experiences.

I believe that one can tell they are living a meaningful life through happiness and the way they put themselves out there in society. If someone just sits in their mom's basement all day, playing video games and eating potato chips, they are not making anything out of their life. One can tell they are living a meaningful life if every morning they wake up with a purpose. Starting every day with a new idea and something new they would like to accomplish can show life is meaningful. The more one puts into society, helping others, and forming new ideas on improvements and things that will better everyone in their community, the more it shows they want to live a meaningful life. Possessions do not determine whether or not someone is living life to the fullest with all meanings possible. One can have barely anything physically, such as clothes, technology, and large homes, but can have a great mindset and be the most helpful, happy person that is living life with a lot of meaning. It is great to find meaning in life so that you know you are doing something right. Living life with a purpose day by day shows that you want to find what the true value of life is and what truly matters to you in your life.

How do you know if you are truly living a meaningful life? There are many doings and emotions for you to feel if your living a meaningful life. Helping people who are less fortunate, feeding the hungry, or taking care of the elderly in a compassionate way. Everyone needs a purpose in life and by taking care of our society it gives many people a sense of meaning to life. Even having few possessions and living a simpler way of life may give some people contentment and not have to have all material things to make them feel full of worth. Setting goals for yourself and accomplishing them will make you feel like you have lived a meaningful life. Not caring so much about technology and what is popular at the moment is also a great way to live a meaningful life.

I believe that life is a gift that should be cherished and that you should live each moment of your life to the fullest. Also, to feel loved, have happiness and achieve your goals that you have set for yourself. During life you create long lasting relationships with important people you care about. Including friends, family and even the people you work with or go to school with. Those people are always there for you in any situation and their people you will always remember. You come in to life as a baby. From then on you learn something new everyday of your life. Life is about loving, caring, learning and growing. In life we experience disappointment, which makes us appreciate the good times even more. Through out your life the people that you care about and that care about you surround you with love and from them you learn what is important to you and what you value in life. I value the people in my life that I love much more then any material possession such as a house, a car or even fancy clothes. Things can always be replaced. People, however, cannot.

A person knows that they are living a meaningful life if they had or have done something good with it. Truly living is more than just giving up your possessions. We attempt to find meaning and worth in our lives to assure that we have a proper place in this world. Theology cannot fully describe why we do this, it's as if we are trying to describe each other without knowing all of the details. We do this for much more than just our own personal comfort.

I believe that people can know if they are truly living a mteaningful life if they are happy about what they've done and are satisfied with them, also. I also feel that you wouldn't neccasarily have to take all of their possessions, but just set them down and not think about it for a while and just live for a couple hours. People want to find what the true meaning of life is, because man just wants to know naturally out of curiosity. Man is a very curious creature and wants to know about life and all of the factors that go into it.

In my opinion I think that only you can determine if you fulfilled your life. For me, I feel like it is about happiness, and feeling like you have purpose. I feel that there is really no reason people try people try and find a meaning in there life. It might be an instinct, it makes us feel like me mean something. There are many ways to try and find out what your purpose in life is. You can do what Thoreau did, get rid of all your possessions, but I don't think it has to be that complicated. Another way to find out what your purpose may be, is to simply find out what makes you feel happy and proud. For example it could be donating toys for kids on Christmas, or giving food to the hungry. Everyone is different so each and every ones of our reasons of living are different too. But overall I think that the reason why we find out our reasons of living, is because it overall makes us feel happy and like a better person.

Nobody truly knows the meaning of a meaningful like. Everybody's perception of a meaningful like. Some think a person is all that matters others may feel money is all that matters. If getting rid of something or someone makes you feel as though it helps you find the meaning of a meaningful life. The whole point of living life is in your own eyes some put themselves in situations that they think will help figure out the meaning of a meaningful life.

The meaning to life to me would be my family because without family, the true people who love you, there would be no happiness for me. Family is something that keeps not only me but the whole world continuing on. Some people may not always get along with their family but you cant deny that your parents brought you into this world, whether or not they are you biological family or an adoptive family or even if your aunt, uncle, or grandparents raise you. They bring great meaning to your life.

Personally, i belive everyone was put on this earth with a purpose. Everyones is different. You dont need possessions to make your meaning of life any different. these possessions only make you temporarly happy. in my eyes the definition of life would be making a change. my meaning of life, could effect and change the way another person views their life. life is about living. not worth, we find worth in ourselves to make living our life more meaningful.

Meaning in ones life could be determined by many things. Your meaning in your life; personally, can only be determined by your actions in life and your goals. Personally one finds out his/her meaning in life through a dramatic encounter and how that meaning relates to your life is only determined by your actions and accountability.

To me the true meaning of life is happiness. God only gave each of us one life to live, so we better live it happy and without regrets. we should cherish family and friends more than any material possessions because material possessions are replaceable, but people are not. Our happiness should spread and bring joy and meaning into the lives of others.

One Knows if they are truly living a meaningful life when everything you do makes you happy. The decisions you make keep you happy and you regret nothing. Life is more precious then valuable possessions and needy thing. Its about the moments you make and the people you make them with, and anything in between that makes you happy. Sometimes finding meaning in your life will cause you to let something or someone go, change something in your life. who knows if that would actually have a good impact on your life? Humans attempt to find meaning because some often ask themselves what is there to live for or what am I living for. In this stage they decide to find there inner selves to help find meaning in life. Finding your self to some would give you a feeling of relief knowing your living for something.

I believe that each individual has a different perception of what makes one's life "meaningful". For some being happy, and being at peace with the world is enough for them to believe that their life has meaning; but for others, that is not nearly enough to satisfy their definition of living a "meaningful life". We humans look to find worth in our lives to feel happy and content. We want to feel like we did something to make the world the way it is. We want to feel special and know that we changed someone's life by being part of it. I believe that searching for worth in one's life is only for personal comfort. Each and every human being wants to feel accomplishment in their lives. When someone feels like they have accomplished something they are satisfied. When one is truly content with himself and his life, there is meaning in his existence. When people feel like they are not living a "meaningful life", many often wonder, "whats the point of being here?". I believe everyone has a purpose on this earth, and when they find their purpose, their life will seem more meaningful.

i honestly feel like life is so precious & none of us should take it for granted. i feel like we won't know how meaningful our life is until it's taken from us, but i also feel we won't think of our life as "meaningful" until we actually accomplish something that we can say we're proud of, or makes us happy..if that makes sense.

I think one knows they are living a meaningful life when they are happy with themselves and the role they are playing in for others lives as well. Making a big impact on someones elses life makes your life meaningful to some people. Its hard to know you are living a meaninful life if you are not happy with yourself nor confident in doing what you are doing. People attempt to find the meaning and worth in our lives because without knowing the meaning or worth of it then how are you supposed to know how it is to live your life.

I think humans try to find meaning in life because as humans we are interested in anything and everything. We want to know how things work and why they do what they do. People search for a meaning in life so they have an idea of what they 're supposed to do. Only people who live happily are those who truly know the meaning of life. Being happy is the most important thing, whether you're happy working tireesly for self gain or dedicating your life to help others and help better their situation over your own, both those and any way of life is fine as long as you're happy and can be at peace with yourself when you can longer live.

You are truly living when you are doing what you want, respectively because whatever you want to do obviously piques your interest, unless you wouldn't be doing it. What I mean by doing what you want is to do it to glorify the growth and production of society in a positive way. Just because you're doing something to make a positive difference in the world, doesn't mean that you can't or won't like it; it can turn into something you like to do, willingly. The meaning of life can definitely be found in reducing a person's possessions to their mere existence because you become more appreciative and aware of what's around you, rather than the repetitive cycle you go through every day. Reducing a person's possessions can open their eyes to new things they probably wouldn't have ever found if they were blinded by their possessions. Humans try to find meaning and worth in their lives because they are simply not satisfied by the life they are living and the choices they have made, but fail to change the things dissatisfying to them because they don't like change. Humans try to find worth because of the uncomfortableness of the same things we do day after day.

I have read a lot of these comments and I have not really heard a lot of people mention the fact that the key of life is in yourself and it is your decision on what the key of YOUR OWN life is. I believe this because as I look at these somments a lot of other people have different ideas to the key of life. In my opinion I think the key of life is to find out what has been a mystery in your life and solve it by the end of your lifetime.

I don't think anyone's life can be regarded as meaningful or meaningless until the day he dies or even hundreds of years after he dies.Because one's life probably can not be valued well , and only time can tell the truth.Besides,I don't really agree that the meaning of one's life is related to reducing one's possession to his mere existence. For example, there are lots of creative people, they use more resource than their actual need but they also create lots of opportunity and even change the world while some poor people even do not have any chance to do more things than make a mere living. What's more,I feel that it's human's nature to explore the universe including themselves. And the huge social change makes people weak and uncertain about themselves ,which inspires them to think deep about themselves and search for answer.I do believe that human search for the meaning of life because of their thirst for knowledge .
